Did you know that according to 2020 U.S. census that 55% of Native Hawaiians are living outside of the islands? And I am one them!
What should be an easy question to answer can be difficult for Native people born in the diaspora — like me I am a first generation Native Hawaiian born and raised outside of Hawai‘i. That means that all of my Native Hawaiian ancestors were born and raised on island, and my brother and I were the first not to be! I grew up in Washington state — and Washington will always be home.
